Pantone Gray shades by lightness

Gray-family colors break naturally into three lightness bands. Light grays - Cool Gray 1 through 4, near-white neutrals - sit above 65 percent lightness and read as subtle backgrounds and gentle dividers. Medium grays - Cool Gray 5 through 8, and mid-numbered grays - sit between 35 and 65 percent lightness and carry the bulk of gray's visual weight in typography and UI. Dark grays - Cool Gray 9 through 11, and deep numbered grays - sit below 35 percent lightness and function as near-black neutrals with a visible cast.

How to match Pantone Gray in design

Matching Pantone gray in design comes down to three decisions: cast (warm, cool, or neutral), lightness band, and paper behavior. First, decide cast: cool grays feel technical and modern, warm grays feel grounded and human, neutral grays feel institutional and flexible. Most design systems pick one side of the spectrum for consistency - mixing cool and warm grays usually reads as accidental. Second, pick the lightness band: light grays work as backgrounds and dividers, medium grays carry typography weight, and dark grays provide contrast without going full black. Third, always proof on the final stock - gray is the most paper-sensitive family in the entire Pantone system, and the same Cool Gray 5 C on coated versus uncoated paper can look like two different colors.

Common mistakes with Pantone Gray

Mixing Cool Grays and Warm Grays in the same palette without intent - the two casts clash visibly and usually read as accidental

Using a Pantone gray as a text color without checking contrast - many mid-tone grays fail WCAG AA against white at body text sizes

Assuming a gray is "neutral" - every Pantone gray has a slight cast (cool or warm), and screens often exaggerate the cast compared to print

Skipping the proof for gray on uncoated stock - uncoated paper turns a cool gray warmer and darker, sometimes dramatically

Using Warm Gray 11 C as a black substitute - it looks black on screen but reads warmer and softer in print, which can look off-brand

Questions about Pantone Gray

What is the most popular Pantone gray?

Cool Gray 5 C through Cool Gray 9 C are the most widely specified Pantone grays in UI and typography systems, because they provide readable contrast without the harshness of pure black. Warm Gray 5 C and Warm Gray 8 C are the most common warm grays for editorial and print contexts. Pantone 425 C is the most used numbered gray for typographic systems in print design.

What is the difference between Cool Gray and Warm Gray?

Cool Gray has a faint blue or blue-green cast - it reads as technical, modern, and slightly cold. Warm Gray has a faint yellow, brown, or red cast - it reads as grounded, editorial, and slightly warm. Cool Gray 1 C is nearly white with a blue tint; Warm Gray 1 C is nearly white with a yellow tint. The two families span the same lightness range (1 through 11), so the choice is about cast, not lightness.

What is the Pantone code for silver?

There is no silver in the standard Pantone Solid Coated library - silver is a metallic color that belongs to the Pantone Premium Metallic library. The closest solid-ink approximations to "silver" are Cool Gray 3 C through Cool Gray 5 C (for a warm silvery gray) or Pantone 877 C (which is technically a metallic silver ink). For a true metallic silver effect, the Pantone Premium Metallic or Metallic Coated library is required - the standard Solid Coated library cannot reproduce a metallic finish.

How many Pantone grays are there?

The Pantone Matching System includes 22 named Cool and Warm Grays (1 C through 11 C each) plus more than 100 numbered grays across its Solid Coated and Solid Uncoated libraries. Our catalog shows 335 gray-family colors - a broader set that includes any color with very low saturation that is not dark enough to be classified as black.

Why does gray look different in print?

Gray is the most paper-sensitive family in the Pantone system because subtle changes in how the paper absorbs and reflects light translate directly to visible differences in the perceived gray. Uncoated stock absorbs ink unevenly, softening the color and sometimes warming the perceived hue. Coated stock reflects more light and preserves the intended cast more accurately. Always proof Pantone gray on the final production stock, especially when the gray is part of a brand identity or typography system.
